Dear athletes, participants of the European Championship of Athletics – 2. League, welcome to Varaždin!
Our city has always been open to the hearts of many guests – tourists, businessmen, artists, athletes …
Varaždin is one of the oldest European cities in Central Europe, and the status of a free royal town was given back to 1209 by the Croatian-Hungarian king Andrew II. During more than eight centuries of bursty history, Varaždin was at one point (from 1756 to 1776) the capital of Croatia, and today it is the economic, cultural and educational center of the Croatian north.
Varaždin is today a city of sports and youth. More than 10,000 students attend the secondary school, and more than 7,000 students study at the University of North and the Faculty of Organization and Informatics and the Faculty of Geotechnics of the University of Zagreb. Many of them deal with sports and achieve outstanding results. We, citizens of Varaždin, have repeatedly expressed themselves as top organizers of major sports events (Universities, European and World Championships in Handball, European U17 Championships in Football, Table Tennis Championships etc.) and this year we mark 30 years since Junior European Championships in athletics held at our Sloboda Sports Center. We still remember the legendary finale of the high jump, the end of which was held under the spotlights – personal cars! It was also the biggest and most exciting athletic competition held in our town.
I firmly believe that the European Team Championship in Athletics – 2nd League will be equally so exciting and quality. At the renewed Sloboda Stadium as good hosts we will try to create the best conditions for our dear guests – athletes from 12 European countries.
I am convinced that they will use these conditions and achieve the best results, but that the sporty motive will have enough time to meet our beautiful city and its hospitable inhabitants and that their stay in Varaždin and Croatia will remain in permanent memory!
